Job: Counsellor (2 Positions)
Organization: Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP)
The Counsellor is responsible for providing pre-test and post-test counselling and ongoing psychosocial support counselling to Rakai Health Sciences Program clients, patients and participants and other community members in his/her area of jurisdiction.
Jobs Responsibilities
- Provide HIV results and counselling to those who request to know their results.
- Provide follow-up/ongoing psycho-social support and counselling to respondents/clients as appropriate.
- Promote index HIV client testing and/ assisted partner notification services following national guidelines.
- Promote couple counselling, disclosure of HIV results and/or partner notification following standard guidelines.
- Provide first-line support and referral to clients experiencing GBV as per MOH guidelines.
- Provide HIV Recency counselling following MOH guidance.
- Conduct HIV/AIDS education as well as general health education in the study communities as appropriate.
- Promote distribution and use of condoms among study participants as an HIV/AIDS prevention and control strategy.
- Attending mobilization and sensitization meetings whenever and wherever they are called upon.
- Any other duty assigned by supervisor from time to time.
- Preparing and presenting on a regular basis, field reports on counselling activities carried out.
- Representing Rakai Health Sciences Program in the community and is the custodian of Rakai Program property in the community.
- Collecting bio-behavioural health related data as may be deemed necessary.
- Any other duty (ies) as assigned to him/her by the Counselling Supervisor from time to time.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- The successful candidate should possess Degree in Counseling and Guidance, Community Psychology, Education, Social Sciences, Adult & Community Education and other related courses from a recognized institution.
- A certificate in HIV/AIDS counseling conforming to the MOH HCT policy is a MUST.
- Must follow the code of ethics associated with the respective certification.
- Have obtained at least 2 years’ experience in counseling, with a minimum of one year in HIV and AIDS counseling or medical environment/setting, or hands on experience in similar work.
- Pleasant, social, hardworking, flexible, with a spirit of teamwork/building.
- Good interpersonal skills and high integrity.
- Fluent in English and Luganda (spoken and written).
- Self-motivated and able to work under minimum supervision.
- Willingness to work and reside in a rural setting – Rakai or Kyotera District and to work for long hours.
