About US: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Carry out interviews and litigation assessments, as applicable, in line with the registration/verification/individual case-processing policies and standard operating procedures.
- Collaborate with Government colleagues in the adjudication and decision making on complex cases.
- Provide counselling to and respond to queries from asylum seekers and refugees.
- Support timely identification and referral of persons with specific needs for protection intervention and follow-up as required. Collaborate with other units for the delivery of assistance.
- Assist in monitoring individual case processing trends and in compiling and analyzing statistics related to individual case processing. Maintain accurate and up-to- date records and statistics related to all work on individual cases, ensuring that proGres database is properly updated.
- Assist in developing and maintaining updated tools to ensure that PoC have access to accurate information on the UNHCR individual case-processing policies and procedures.
- Support verification exercise in various locations in Uganda
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Protection Associate job placement should hold a High School Diploma or Bachelor or equivalent in law, Social Sciences or related field is required.
- Three years of relevant experience is required.
- Ability to conduct litigation/protection interviews, to analyze, decide and report on the situation of beneficiaries is required.
- Working knowledge of English is required

Desirable Qualifications
- Working experience with procedures and principles related to registration and verification is desirable.
- Previous work experience in the field of International Refugee Law and Human Rights Law is desirable.
- Experience in counselling asylum seekers or refugees is desirable.
- Experience in working with UNHCR proGres v4 software is desirable.
